Of new years, sleep, work, games, cars, dermatofibroma and whatnot...
So... today I'm back at work.
I had hoped to get a sensible amount of sleep last night, but alas this was not to happen. Somewhere just before new year's eve my body decided that it was, for no readily apparent reason, going to grab my perfectly adequate sleep pattern and twist it firmly in a clockwise direction. In other words, my body clock shifted to run about four hours later than it had previously. Suddenly. Usually this kind of thing happens gradually, but this time it just happened. One night I couldn't get to sleep until about four hours later than the point where I usually flake out completely... thus far I've been completely unable to skew things back to where they should be. Hopefully being forced to get up for work will put me back on the right track... if not, I've got a few other tricks up my sleeve before I have to resort to percussive maintenance.
As for work, well, I'm doing okay - I'm used to functioning without enough sleep due to my mammoth bouts of insomnia. Of course, I am being a little more scuppered by the fairly pervasive non-presence of other people who can actually answer questions and be sounding boards for ideas coming from the answers. Ah well, it gives me time to do more exploratory work and generally make sure I'm keeping on top of the whole web/UI/UX/IA field.
[EDIT: Just remembered that
barty has done some stuff relating to what I'm working on, and so interrogated him to ensure I wasn't barking up completely the wrong tree. Fortunately, my barking has the correct dentritic alignment.]
In case you'd not noticed, and entire year passed overnight a couple of nights ago, unlike other nights when only a night goes by, they snuck much more time into this one. As a result we had to start a whole new one... wonder how long this one will last? Anyway - it's called "2008" - how unoriginal. Even software vendors change things around a bit every now and then... Look at Dreamweaver, for instance: Dreamweaver, Dreamweaver 2, Dreamweaver 3, Dreamweaver Ultradev 1, Dreamweaver 4, Dreamweaver UltraDev 4, Dreamweaver MX, Dreamweaver MX 2004, Dreamweaver 8, Dreamweaver CS3. Calling this new year "2008" shows a lack of marketing pizazz. Year Vista! 2008buntu! Year-X: Leopard!
Anyway - I saw in the new year with our now traditional new-year game, run once again by yours truly. Things were a little stilted early on as people got into the swing of things, but things perked up noticably with the arrival of the PCs (a typical assortment of pseudo Jeeves & Wooster characters) on the shores of R'lyeh (or "Riley", as it was being called in these circumstances). Upon arriving on shore, a game of cricket naturally ensued, hindered only marginally by the ball and the fielders occasionally being swallowed by the unspeakable geometries of the landscape. Anyway, because it was Jeeves and Wooster style, they all survived with their sanity largely unaffected... Far too oblivious to notice anything truly mind shattering. Although Cthulhu did steal the cricket bat.
On the "other games" front, I have succumbed to the productivity virus that is Civilization IV. It is an evil, life eating monstrosity. I've played a couple of games in the past week or so... The first without any mods, which I won by being first to colonize another planet. Once I'd done that, I went and crushed the French because they'd spent the preceeding centuries being complete goat-widening cockmonkeys. The second game I've been playing with the "final frontier" SF mod - I've not finished yet, but it looks like I'll come out on top. I'm not a huge fan of the technologies & improvements in that mod, though. Not enough variation, and not enough different approaches available.
Cars - I've finally managed to book my car in to get it's coolant leak looked at... next week. If you have to have your car break at some point, I would suggest that you arrange for it to happen well clear of Christmas. Clearly it's a popular time for such things as well as being a popular time for anybody who can do very much about it to disappear. Anyway, with luck I'll be unpedestrianised again in the near future.
On the health front, I'm actually not ill for a change. Although I think I do have another Dermatofibroma (aka: Fibrous Histiocytoma) appearing. I do wish they wouldn't do that as they're quite irritating, really. I had one on my hand a while back, and this new one seems to be appearing about an inch and a quarter from the scar that the first one left. At least they're totally harmless - merely irritating, itchy, lumpy things that catch on pretty much anything that a lump on your hand can catch on. In other news, I bit my tongue yesterday and it's still bugging me.
