This is a "whilst doing other things" continuation of my great CD listen through.
I listen to music a lot whilst working, so here I'm taking a couple of minutes out after each CD to type up some thoughts and post them up. It's not as thorough as I would be if I was listening at a time other than when I was working... but if I did that then I probably wouldn't finish for years.
All About Eve - Winter Words: Hits and Rarities
I'm not going to dwell on this CD too much, as a lot of it will have already been covered by earlier posts. But I will say that it's a good compilation, and it includes songs from albums I don't have (yet - they're on order). If you wanted a good All About Eve compilation, you could do worse than this.
It's got "The Dreamer" and "Strangeway" on it, for a start, which are two of my favourite All About Eve songs. I'm not going to say much more than that as I've got the original albums on order!
Verdict: Keep.
Ed Alleyne-Johnson - Purple Electric Violin Concerto
Even without re-listening to it, I know I'm keeping this one. One guy, recording an album in a single take with no remixing or alteration afterwards, using a hand made (by himself) 5-string electric violin and an assortment of effects and delay pedals.
It's awesome. I was trying to pick out highlights, but found I couldn't - The least listenable bit is probably the improvised chunk near the end of the disc, and that's still pretty damned good.
Verdict: Keep.
Ed Alleyne-Johnson - Ultraviolet
As with the above, this is going straight on the keep list, and for many of the same reasons. This isn't a single recording, but 10 or so individual pieces around a common theme. A certain amount of it is a progression from the previous CD, but it's quite distinct. I find it to be excellent background / atmospheric music.
Standouts: Orange, Violet, Ultraviolet (I like the plucking, you see)
Verdict: Keep.
I'm not doing very well at this "clearout" business. I've ordered another new CD (Ed Alleyne-Johnson's Symphony) and haven't trimmed anything out of the collection yet. I may have to downgrade that Age of Reason CD from an earlier post to the (currently empty) "free for all / charity shop" pile. Then again, the standard has been conspicuously high in those first few CDs. I suspect I'll hit a rich vain of embarrassing dross at some point.
