Today, I shall mostly be plundering Tangency...

So, about Nyarlathotep.

Would I be correct in thinking that Nyarlathotep has an avatar which is totally human in appearance. One who appears as a clean cut, polite gentleman of colour and has an association with music in some way?

I seem to have this recollection, and various others on RPG.net's Tangency forum (now for registered users only, or I'd link to it) have unwittingly supported me (I didn't post, because others beat me to it).

It appears that Google knows things that the human mind cannot accept.

Go to google's image search, and enter "Nyarlathotep". First page of results, bottom row.

Google Knows. Google has seen. Ia! Ia! Google f'taghn!

Splendid!

In the old Call of Cthulhu main book they had an adventure in which Nyarlathotep appeared in 1920s New Orleans as a black gentleman and gave a young jazz player (who mistook him for Louis Armstrong) a trumpet made of a strange, unearthly metal. This trumpet could raise the dead.

That might be what you're thinking of. :)

I do not and have never played Cthulu. Hubbie has and I have read enough.

You are quite correct - think saxaphones.

http://www.miskatonic.net is cute, if noisy!

And if you do an image search for 'Nyarlothotep', you get the Linux logo...

In the adventure At Your Door, it is revealed that Nyarlathotep actually has several human forms. One of these is definitely as you describe. I could go on, but I would be revealing priveleged keeper knowledge.

Since he isn't actually an outer-god, he doesn't technically have avatars; merely 1001 different shapes. :)
