Went to lunch yesterday, and the canteen we reluctantly chose to go to was packed solid with nuns. Quite a surreal incident, really, so I thought it deserved a mention.
As for the lunch, well, it was pretty dire. Food here is pretty bad at the best of times... The choice of canteens in term time is as follows:
- Student Union Cafe - Greasy spoon. Quite nice, but if we ate there every day I'd inflate like a balloon and die.
- Southlands - Traditional School Dinners... ie. Slop & Stodge with chips that suck the moisture from your mouth.
- LRC Coffee Shop - does pretty decent baguettes, but not very thrilling.
- Digby Stuart - World cuisine served under a thick layer of grease or oil. Fine if you like your food lubricated. They do have a "cooked in front of you" stirfry type thing which is good, but expensive.
- Ritazza Cafe - Sandwiches, panini and cakes. Expensive and usually have a tiny range of unthrilling things to choose from.
- Froebel - School Dinners, but also burger and chips. Burgers vary from passable to sliced charcoal briquette in a rigid, crispy bun. Burger Roulette.
- Whitelands - Actually quite nice, and not hideously expensive. Unfortunately, it's a reasonable distance away, and going there takes up the entire break.
Of course, because it's the holidays, the options are reduced to just Southlands, LRC coffee shop, Ritazza, Froebel (sit with the exchange students and summer school kids - LOUD!) or possibly Whitelands (not been there to see if it's open in the summer). Bah!
I've been trying to get around to bringing my own food in, but that's just so much hassle that I generally manage it only once or twice a week.
