Bored already...

So... first day back at work...

I got in late due to having to come in via the doctors so I could pick up the doctors certificate, but I'm here.

It's now 11:30 and I've only just finished working through my "first pass" of my email - the one where I go through and look for urgent things, delete obvious spam and forward on emails that clearly have nothing to do with me. I'm now having a break, and in a short while I'll have a crack at "second pass", where I actually read some of the non-urgent, probably for me emails.

My manager isn't in, so I have no clue what I'm meant to be doing, as other folks have actually been taking over some of my work for the past fortnight. Even weirder... there's someone else in our office. A new person. We've got a temporary web design bod in to work on our backlog / take up some slack whilst I was away. I have no idea what he's been working on.

Apparently my manager wasn't expecting me to really do anything if I came in today, anyway. I take that as having her blessing to slack off ease myself back into work gently. Which is fair, because I do need to - I'm kind of tired after travelling in and I'm more than a little brain dead. If I tried to do anything taxing right now I reckon I'd probably make a right hash of it.

Bizarrely, one of the emails I picked up on the first pass was non work related, instead being from an old schoolfriend who I've not seen in about 11 and a bit years...

Take advantage of the slack time whilst you can. By Monday you'll be given new projects which by Wednesday will be come critical and you'll be POOMAing for a Friday deadline, and back where you were before the illness.

Or perhaps it'll be different this time?

After my appraisal, the POOMA levels should reduce... It's been made clear that the POOMA actually limits my ability to do core elements of my job, particularly staying up to date as our accessibility and standards guru.

We've also been given something of a new direction for the overall web presence to go in, and it's one I have a handle on and some familiarity with, whilst everyone else is kind of clueless on the matter. It's been acknowledged that I need to have time for technical research, blue sky research and time to do random test implementations of things that may not pan out.

We've also now got permission to hire people in occasionally to do some of the donkeywork...

Sounds promising. You'll probably find yourself the point of contact for a lot of things. I suspect this new bloke might need assistance unless he's an expert already.

Allegedly he's capable of working on projects without our assistance, and his point of contact is my line manager, specifically so that his work doesn't add to everyone elses. I am yet to see anything he's working on, so I don't know how well that's going to pan out...
