Things and stuff...
What have I been up to lately? Not a great deal.
Watching stuff:
Stargate SG-1 seems to be on a bit of a downer at the moment. I like it. They're doing a pretty good job of making the Ori actually be imposing bad guys. Until last night's episode I thought they were beginning to labour the point, constantly having them be a harsh enemy yet the SGC was coming out with very few discernable setbacks. Last night they actually showed that the Ori have teeth, and that the SGC does not come out unscathed.
Hopefully we'll start seeing a bit more progression soon, though.
Stargate Atlantis is picking up nicely. I liked it to begin with - particularly the various scientific/medical civilian characters, who all have fantastic personalities and egos. Last night was a bit of a squib of an episode, but I suspect we'll be seeing more of that planet in the future... It seems like exactly the kind of minor episode that the stargate franchise likes to revisit later on and launch something bigger from.
Angelic Layer wouldn't normally be my kind of thing, but in this case it's done well enough that I was drawn in to the story.
Azumanga Daioh. How to describe this. Okay, I can't. Take Grange Hill writers. Expose them to pschotropic drugs. Unleash in japanese school. Keep up the intravenous hallucinogens. Commission to write an animated series. Do not remove drugs.
I've already mentioned My Neighbour Totoro in a previous post as being unfeasibly cute, yet still really enjoyable to watch if you fin unfeasibly cute a bit annoying. The Cat Returns is another Studio Ghibli film, and is really quite strange. Cool and watchable, though.
As for the Unknown Armies LARP, I think it went fantastically. The groups idea seemed to work for dividing up the players and letting them get more familiar in a small group and then widening it out. They may revert to separate groups again, but it's entirely possible that the groups will not be the same...
The beginnings of plot that were dropped in seemed to be well recieved, and the characters meshed well. I think everyone has something to add to the mix, although not all of them have demonstrated it yet. We had stress checks all over the place, which is great to have early on, as it means that the characters are well though through... now some folks have some more hardened and failed notches, which always adds to the fun!
Made a slight Gaffe when GMing one of the groups, but caught it before it had got too far... Used the wrong NPC name for a few minutes. The perils of having to work without notes on a new game - the conditions were too cramped for me to use notes as the players would have been able to see them as easily as I could.
For anyone who's interested, I've put up an "actual play" thread about it on RPG.net's Roleplaying Open forum. I've tried to keep it spoiler free, and to only mention things which are already known to players, but it's possible I've put in things that I shouldn't, or made mistakes. This means that players reading it should take care and take things with a pinch of salt. Or just avoid it.
Might be at pub tonight, might not. Depends on mood. Note to all and sundry: Dark Ages downtimes need to be in by tomorrow night or they'll probably be ignored. NO game planning will take place the day before the next game as that's my birthday and I will be scorning game planning in favour of doing something frivolous.
