So, I have been made aware of some fan re-edits of the first two star wars prequels which actually manage to turn them into good films. The worst of the dialogue is gone, and with most of the aliens redubbed to speak in alien (with subtitles) several of them have had personality changes and the like - most notably JarJar, who apparently is completely different and no longer an annoying little turd.
These re-edits go by the names of "Balance of the Force" and "The Clone War", and were created by somebody calling themselves "magnoliafan" (a kevin smith reference).
I have heard very good things about these re-edits and would rather like to see them. If anybody happens to have found them already, give me a shout. I'll keep an eye out as well, and see if I can download them.
I've also heard of one referred to as "The Phantom Re-Edit" (not "The Phantom Edit", which is a different one), which goes one step further and recasts jarjar as some kind of force mystic... Despite being quite bizarre, it apparently works. This version intrigues me too.
