So, I'm now experimenting with the current preview of the Opera 9 browser. It's striking me as being rather similar to Opera 8 so far, but I know it's got some fairly significant extras under the bonnet.

I've not played with them yet, but I like the look of the following features particularly:

  • BitTorrent
  • A widget engine (like Konfabulator / Yahoo Widget Engine)
  • Site specific preferences (want to use different preferences for the odd site? Do so!)

More blurb can be found here.

Hopefully the release version will crop up soon.

The widget engine just sounds like a whole load of trouble if you ask me. Can anyone say malware vector magnet?

As ever, it'll be optional. Most likely (since this is opera we're talking about) it'll be a fair bit safer than similar things on offer elsewhere (the aforementioned Konfabulator, etc...).

I've not even been able to find how to turn it on yet, in all my experiments. The main bits I'm happy with are the site specific preferences and the built in bittorrent...

After a bit more research:
Only if you download, install and activate a malware infested widget. Much like software in general, in fact.

It's probably better for a user to download a widget than it is for them to download a random bit of desktop software, as widgets are more restricted than, say, java applications or generic malware infested freebie software installers.

Ah, that eases my mind somewhat. Sounds interesting.
