So... After a weekend of looking at cars and moving kilns, I returned home yesterday evening (after a train journey from hell, as is fairly typical). Of course, what I wanted to do was then relax so that I could be vaguely alive for work this morning. So the world decided to conspire against me. Whilst eating, I discovered something that was harder than tooth...

So I'm currently sitting here with a big empty space where a chunk of one of my back teeth used to be. I think I used to have a filling there, and that what's happened is that the filling has come out, and the weakened tooth broke under the strain of eating.

Thankfully, I've had private dental care since I was small (as my teeth appear to be made of something with the rigidity of cheese), so I am in a position to deal with this kind of thing easily. It's made a bit more complicated by my being between dentists at the moment, but still... I phoned the emergency line for my care provider. They offered to get one of their dentists to see me there and then, but as it isn't actually hurting we decided to go for getting me an appointment today instead. So I had the rest of my night to probe the hole in my tooth with my tongue, discovering the various sharp edges and what have you.

Now I'm just waiting for the actual appointment. I'm still a bit confused at the fact that it doesn't seem to hurt... Well, that's not quite true - there's a bit of a dull ache there, but nothing like what I'd expect it to be. The biggest problem that I'm having is that I'm hungry, but I don't really want to try eating anything much with a sodding great hole in my tooth!

One of my wisdom teeth broke a while ago because it had rotted through from the back (bloody thing was impossible to clean) and that didn't hurt either. And yet I had a filling last week and I had to be peeled off the ceiling every time they used the water squirty thing (not the drill, just the water jet!) because my sensitive teeth decided this was a form of torture. Teeth are weird!

Maybe the nerve has decayed or rotted?
