No longer being probed...

It would appear that my probationary period ends today, and as such I am no longer being probed. This means that my current employers are now stuck with me for the forseeable future!

I'm quite happy about this, as I like working in an organisation where people have a clue. Unlike where I was before, where (as regular readers will understand) I faced a constant struggle to resist being forced do the downright insane and where mediocrity was something we were actively striving for. The immediate team were great - couldn't have asked for a nicer bunch of people to work with. Organisationally, however, the place was fundamentally buggered. Petty politics was more important than getting anything done, and the organisation as a whole was crippled by a complete lack of trust or respect for the expertise they hired to do a given job.

In other words, I'm glad I'm out.

As for the new place... Isn't working in the real world supposed to be more stressful than working in an academic institution? Sure, my workload looks worse on paper, but when I'm given a job to do I'm not then constantly prevented from doing so...

If I keep going on like this, I'm going to start referring to people as "small minded fools", berating them for understanding my vision and then threatening to destroy them with my mighty creations. In short - I'm enjoying my new job a lot because I'm treated like a human being rather than a statistic and my knowledge of my field is respected here.

Reading what you said about your previous employer, I was suddenly struck with the thought that you could replace their name with Cam and it'd still be perfectly truthful ;)

My experience with Cam is less up to date, though. It was also a bit easier to just do stuff under the radar in Cam...

My general impression is that the opposite is true. Academia seems to be full of mad tin pot dictators, with "petty politics" as their specialist subject.

Ah, but they convey an image to most of the "real world" of having a relaxed, laid back atmosphere whatnot. This is used to justify the low salaries.

Unfortunately, that's complete bollocks, and the pitiful salaries are in fact just because universities can't afford to / choose not to pay sensibly. It's not one of these or the other, but a combination of both.
