Last night I finally managed to get to the swimming pool again. It felt good, even though my overall fitness has clearly slumped since I stopped going.

When I was a kid I used to go swimming a couple of times a week, which expanded to going pretty much daily from aged about 16 or 17 onwards. I'd also be fencing once or twice a week and I cycled everywhere - if I didn't have anywhere to cycle, I'd just pick a direction and cycle that way for an hour or two, then cycle back again.

I really didn't look it, but I was the stealth fit'n'healthy kid. Actually, I was fit but not really healthy - I was asthmatic and for various reasons I was ill a lot. But you get the gist.

Then I got to university, and I couldn't afford to go swimming that much anymore. Or indeed, at all. I also couldn't afford to go fencing. My exercise routine turned into a near daily 30 minute walk down a big hill, followed closely by a 30 minute walk back up the big hill... Later on, [livejournal.com profile] cryx got a car, and so my walks to and from town diminished (not her fault at all, btw).

Then I got a job and moved down the hill, which meant I didn't need to walk up and down it anymore. This was the true beginning of my sedantry IT professional lifestyle.

Around mid to late last year I finally started to go swimming again after a very long gap. I managed to get into the habit of going every Wednesday with [livejournal.com profile] izzy_stradlin. I was even good in that if I missed a session, I normally found time to go another day instead (usually Sunday mornings, before heading up to work on theatre sets & scenery).

Unfortunately, when the weather got really, really cold... I started encountering problems with going on wednesday nights, which were the only practical regular time available to me. Basically, I'd get into the pool around 8:30pm, and get out around 9:15-9:30pm. Because it was the evening, there wasn't really anywhere to go other than home, which meant I'd be heading outside into subzero temperatures with wet hair (I have rather a lot and it takes a fair while to dry - 3 to 4 hours on it's own, about 30-40 minutes with a dryer). I was starting to get to the point where going swimming made me feel more crap, rather than less... so I stopped for a bit.

I planned to restart, and was about to, but then I got flu, followed by a lovely chest infection that left me short of breath. It was like having a mild asthma attack... for about a month. So I didn't start going again, and lost the routine.

Last night was my first swim since sometime around christmas, and I plan for it to be the start of a new routine. But by god do I ache all over as a result...
