So, what have I been up to recently?

Well, mostly I've been adjusting to life with a new job and a new commute. Not a huge fan of the commute, but the job seems to be going pretty well. Right now I'm on training, learning how to work the current version of the product, whilst working on some stuff for a future version.

Outside of work I've not done a vast amount - went to [livejournal.com profile] cryx's pseudo-birthday party on saturday, then to Carter's Steam Fair up on Englefield Green on Sunday... Last night was game night. Tonight, no real plans so far... I guess I'll just play it by ear.

The nostalgia kick that started off a couple of weeks ago has continued, though... I've been back in touch with a couple of old friends from Newbury via facebook, which I plan to keep doing. I also did the A-Z thing with my CD collection, which I'm incredibly glad I did - it reminded me of so much good music that I have that I'd just forgotten to pull out and listen to until it vanished from memory completely.

Between the music thing and the nostaligia kick, I joined a facebook group for old regular pub in Newbury (Captain's Cabin), and found a thread discussing the "classics" (ahem) from the video jukebox they had. My occasional insomnia and my time spent ploughing through my music collection lead to me to find every song mentioned on that discussion thread and post the youtube videos for them to that group. Again, some fantastic videos and memories (and a few truly horriffic ones as well)...

Basically, I'm feeling all musically inclined right now. So here's the request:

If you've been through and listened to stuff from my CD collection posts, and think there's some music out there that wasn't present and should be, let me know! If possible, add a couple of youtube links or at least a sample!

So - my nostalgia wave continues. It's been a long time since I last visited Newbury, having gone off to uni in '93 and had my parents move away whilst I was there, just as I was finally starting to catch up on the whole "social skills" thing.

I went back a few times whilst I was at uni, up to around 1995. Holidays and the like, visiting Suzanne (my girlfriend from 1992-1995), etc... Since then I've been there exactly twice. Once to get off a train and into a car (I was in newbury for mere minutes) and once as a lunchtime stopover on a random road trip to glastonbury.

A few photos from that roadtrip can be found on facebook, btw. We had a very brief wander, visited donnington castle, popped into the Captains Cabin (my old regular pub) only to discover it'd been completely changed and was now called "Uncle Henry's". Now it's apparently a big pile of ash, having had a slight run-in with some fire.

We didn't spend very long there on that road trip, and I'd quite like to have a proper wander around to see what's changed and what's the same. Visit a pub or two, wander along the canal for a bit, that kind of thing... Obviously I won't be drinking in the pubs unless I either head there by train or arrange a stopover somewhere...

Anyone out there in LJ-land (or facebook-land, since this gets copied there too) fancy joining me in a visit to the place that inflicted itself on my formative years?
