I actually thought about going outside today, just to see the sun for a little while. I even climbed up and opened the hatch just a crack. Of course, I couldn't see very much, and not much sunlight reached me because of all of the debris we'd piled up to stop them from finding us. It seems to have worked though, because we're still here. I could hear them all around, though. The dull metallic grinding sounds as they assemble new components for themselves and the heavy thuds as they walk around. It's their world up there now.
We haven't lost anyone for a while, so I was beginning to wonder if they'd moved on. Of course, they hadn't. They'll have to soon, though, as there's only so much raw material around for them to upgrade and reproduce, but it looks like they're still hanging around up there. It's going to become a problem soon, as our supplies are getting low and we'll need to go up to re-stock. If they're staying long enough to completely strip the area then we're not going to find anything much up there either. They'll have used it all up. They'll even have rendered down all of the organic material to extract the iron from it if they stay much longer, so we won't find anything we can eat. But we'll have to go up and look anyway. If they're still there then they'll use us too. I've heard them doing it to others who went outside, and I really don't want it to come to that.
Still, at least I'd get to feel the sun on my face once more before I died.
Okay, so it's Rabbit Hole Day...
