I actually started making headway on playing a song I know (and so can tell if I'm getting it roughly right). "Shining Road" by Cranes.

It's taken a weird tuning and the use of a capo for me to find a song I know that's not too evil to play, and I suspect I'm going to have a problem with a bit of it (damned F chords), but I played it enough that I could actually recognise bits of what I played! Well, I've got the intro almost spot on, but that's only two chords alternating in straight eights...

Tuning dropped 1 semitone, capo on 2 (which I think is basically the same as normal tuning, capo on 1)

Intro is 8 x E minor, 8 x E.

It gets more complex after that, but I could tell the chords were right and see how to fit it to the words... 4 x A minor, 2 x C, 2 x G (repeat) several times... My timing's a bit (well, a lot) off, but that's just practice needed.

Verse two is slightly different (E minor instead of G) but I can kind of do that too... albeit with my traditional "shot to hell" timing.

It's just going to be the bridge which is a bit of a bugger:
F,G (a different G to usual, formed by sliding the F two frets along), F, A minor.
I suspect I will need to grow a boney spur along the index finger of my left hand to be able to play that bit.
