the_eggwhiteSo far today, I have been continuing the period in Hell which I started yesterday - transferring some of the content from some word documents (en français) into well formed and valid XML markup (en français). For various reasons, this means that I have to go through and find all of the non-standard characters and convert them to entity codes. Joy.
I have now finished that. As a result, I am now working on going through the code and adding in the assorted markup that gets thrown out during the conversion process and has to be put back in painstakingly by hand after the process is finished. So, I am currently reading MS Word documents (en français) to find the bits that are underlined, in italics or bold, then trawling the raw XML markup (en français) for the corresponding text and applying the markup where necessary. Although I am quite surprised by how much of it I do understand, the whole process is made utterly brain melting by the fact that I don't understand enough of it to actually just be able to read it.
As a result, a word is leaping into my head with alarming regularity.
In fact, it's not so much a word as a state of mind.
The word is "Buh?"

2003-05-22 04:46 (UTC)Buh? Merely implies a mindless automaton like state in which any form of conscious thought is rendered impossible, and is probably not required anyway.
Bah! Implies the willfull disobedience of a system, and when any form of conscious thought is rendered irrelevant because the problem is in a language which I do not speak...
